    • This damage was done prior to hurricane Irene. I was just there and the locals were saying it was from a hurricane a while ago and they just dont have the funds for it to be repaired.

  1. That pier was pretty much destroyed when Earl came through. No work was done to repair it. This is old damage. Not new!!!!

    • Yes, you are right. We were just down there in July and this is the same way the pier looked when we were down there. Are there any new pictures from Hurricane Irene? It has to be gone.

  2. the title says the effects of irene on WHAT IS LEFT OF THE FRISCO PIER. i was there in september and although it was in a really bad state it does look like irene has caused even more damage.

  3. Hope that you all are as safe as possible! Don’t take any foolish chances, things can change in a flash with horrible storms like Irene. We don’t need to hear about any foolhardy dudes (that includes ladies, too!) that wanted to watch the storm and were swept out to sea! I used to watch them come in at Newport Beach, CA and watch the power generators go POP and a big blue burst of light came and then block by block the power went out and then Huntington Pier lost 1,000 feet off the end of its pier. So leave it to the professionals and stay safe, ok?

  4. My father, Bob Comstock, was the lifeblood of this pier. He bought it in 1962 with 2 other partners, but when he died in 1986, the ownership went to the 2 partners. Unfortunately, that was the business agreement. My 2 sisters and I love that pier – we never went “to the beach” – we went “to the pier” every summer – and what people we met, especially from the campground that has been replaced by houses. I cry every time I see pictures of the pier and the harm done to her by all the storms. This is nothing new, but my father always got it fixed and operating. But she is still standing, and we feel like she is speaking to us: “I’m still here – please help me”. She is a national treasure, and we are now thinking that this should be official and she should be repaired. We will see.

  5. i agree———as a kid in the 70′s we vacationed up north (nags head/kitty hawk) & for $2.00 each of us kids could & were entertained for HOURS playing pinball & fishing on the good ole fashioned wooden fishing piers…………….UNFORTUNATELY it appears that the independents cannot compete or repair ? ! ?———– apparently they can only slowly & publicly be swallowed up by mother nature………………THAT is a sad thing my friends : (
