    Penn Fathom

    Penn Fathom Star Drag

The revolutionary Live Spindle™ design is the reason the new Fathom Star Drag is the most castable reel in the market place. The improved configuration allows the spool to spin independently of the spindle and pinion gear, which significantly reduces friction experienced from the extreme acceleration of the spool when casting. Other reels using a “fixed spindle” design slow the rotation of the spool and reduce casting distance. Additionally the Live Spindle improves the retrieve of the reel because the spindle and pinion do not need to turn relative to each other during heavy loads, unlike a “fixed spindle” reels that result in a difficult retrieve and erratic drag.

  • Cape Hatteras Notebook: Pamlico Sound Duck Hunting

    Redhead hunting on the Pamlico.
    Redhead hunting on the Pamlico.

I have missed writing for you this week, but I was down and out with some dreadful germ. I am finally feeling better!  One of the worst things about being sick in January is that you miss going duck hunting. And on Hatteras Island, January is all about duck hunting on the Pamlico Sound.  It is cold. It is wet. It is hard work. But, my family would not miss it for the world!

I am very lucky that I have a father who would take me along hunting and fishing when I was growing up.  I have been able to sit beside him in the duck blind for hours watching the sky. I know the thrill of seeing a flock of ducks approaching. I have felt the remorse of missing a duck by a mile. And I have enjoyed the pride when I have made my shot.

The Pamlico Sound brings us some of the best duck hunting opportunities in the country.  The people here have been hunting for generations out of stake blinds and curtain box blinds for redheads, pintails, gadwalls, widgeon, brant and more. The methods have not changed too much over the years.  The blinds look very like they did fifty years ago.  We now have boats that go faster and gear that keeps you warmer, but essentially the experience is what our grandfathers had.

If you are down this way during the winter months you can hunt with guides out of Hatteras village.  Ken Dempsey and Richard Baran are experienced guides who will get you where you need to be.  Don’t forget to come by Frisco Rod and Gun for all the gear you need for a great hunt!  We are open and happy to help you with guns, ammo, accessories, warm clothing and your hunting license.
